Joseph was born in Wipfeld, Germany to Francis Humpfer (Huempfer) and Dorothea nee Schneider.

He came to the US about 1847, first settling in Chicago, IL and shortly after moving to Hammond, IN. He married Agnes Heid in Chicago, where she and his first son, Michael, died in 1850.

On Oct. 7, 1851 he married Catherine Albert and they had 13 children, 9 of whom reached adulthood.

He volunteered at Indianapolis in the 32nd Reg't of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry, aka the "German Reg't". He served from Oct 1862 until his honorable discharge in Oct 1865. He was wounded at the battle of Chicamauga in Sept 1863, spent time in a Nashville hospital and was sent back to resume his service until the end of the war.

He was a lifelong farmer and died at the age of 90.
