He was a Dutch prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. Demarteau was ordained for priest in 1941. A several years later was nominated Apostolic Vicar of Banjarmasin and was elected as a bishop of Banjarmasin, in Indonesia, in 1954. Before his death he lived for many years at the old people's home at the Wisma Simeon in Banjarbaru
